Putharjhora is a tea estate in the Dooars, a lowland region located between Darjeeling and Assam.
Literally translated, Putharjhora means “stream of stones”, reflecting the small mountain streams that flow through these Himalayan foothills and the Brahmaputra River that runs through the gardens. Established in 1887, Putharjhora is currently the only tea garden in the Dooars to practice organic farming since 1997 and biodynamic farming (Demeter certified) since 2005. The landscape is of wild beauty, marked by 3 natural reserves and a tiger reserve.
In this garden, there are no less than 3 million tea trees spread over the 360 hectares of the garden, which has a total of 540! To nourish the earth according to the principles of biodynamics, nearly 150,000 tons of compost are produced each year by a team of twenty people assigned to this task alone.
This shows the human commitment that is at the heart of the process! Few people know the teas of Dooars, they do not have the same reputation as those of Assam, yet they are very close, both in taste and quality.
India / Kerala
PDS (Peermade Development Society), is an NGO founded in 1980 by a Christian religious community with the aim of supporting rural development in Kerala in Southern India.
One of the many missions of this dynamic NGO has been to establish a group of organic and fair trade tea producers called the Sahyadri Consortium.
The NGO and the Consortium of producers have funded an independent tea processing plant.
The producers benefit from a purchase price of fresh leaves between 30 and 70% higher than the market price.
In parallel, the NGO has also set up a section dedicated to the production of spices, grown in organic and biodynamic agriculture, some of which are used in the composition of our scented teas.
It has also set up a hospital, a school, and the development of ayurvedic products.
